If your shaker bottle has seen its share of active duty, you may be wondering whether it’s time to part company…. But what if, like most of us, you really like your shaker? It took you a while to find one that’s really durable and very comfortable using. So, you’re not really ready to recycle it, just yet.
Good news! GAT Sport is here to your rescue with the top 5 ways to keep your shaker funk-free. First, here’s some paraphrased sage advice from noted cleaning expert and New York Times bestselling author, Jolie Kerr.
She advises, “When protein powder residue sits too long, it turns gummy and clumps up — making it really hard to wash. You might’ve noticed that it also starts to stink.” Hence, the funky smell.” Kerr says, “Just fill it with very hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Allow it to soak for 10-15 minutes before washing thoroughly.”
5 ways to keep your shaker clean
It’s the most basic way to keep your shaker clean. Just use a little soap and some warm (or hot) water to clean out your shaker. After your workout at the gym, run a little hot water in your shaker and rinse it out. That will allow you to clean your shaker quickly and efficiently. If that doesn’t help defunkify it, you can soak it overnight in warm water and soap.
The great thing about baking soda is that it actually absorbs even strong odors, rather than simply trying to eliminate or mask them.
It’s very popular for removing funky odors all around the house. And, inside refrigerators. So, why not exile the stank from your shaker with baking soda?
Next level attack: If even baking soda doesn’t work as well as you thought it should, try “nuking it” with a solution of vinegar and warm water. Vinegar will absorb pretty much any odor, and will initially leave a strong smell. But don’t worry — leave the cap off to air it out, and the vinegar smell will dissipate quickly.
You might not think to use mouthwash this way. But it sure does work, in the same way it’s great at tackling the germs that cause bad breath. After a few minutes, rinse with water thoroughly.
That includes leaving the top off overnight. You’ll have a cleaner, far less funky shaker in the morning.
Hint within a hint: Always leaving the top off — after rinsing out your shaker and the top — inhibits bacteria growth.
If 1-4 above fails to do the trick, it may just be time to spring for a new shaker bottle. (GAT Sport has a great looking one that’s colorful, rugged and long-lasting.)
You might find it interesting that of even after all that cleaning, you’re still detecting an unlikeable odor in your shaker, it might be time to switch to a non-dairy protein powder. If you’re mixing whey protein and milk (which are both made from dairy), that could cause the odor.
Try a plant-based protein powder, instead of whey protein. Plant-based protein powders aren’t generally as smelly. (Especially if you forget to wash your shaker.)
